This is all about design, fabric, creating beautiful products and then feeling

the ultimate pride in knowing that what I make and sell is of the highest

quality and is the best I can do.

I learned to sew when very small. I have a clear memory of laughing out

loud when my best friend sewed her felt bookmark to her school skirt in

our first needlework class, and then blushing when I realised I had done the same. I silently unpicked it whilst everyone else laughed with poor Abby. I remember my Grandmother giving me my first needlework basket: a small octagonal basket containing the barest essentials. I recently found two of the original reels of 100% cotton thread lurking at the bottom of my now enormous thread basket, and I still keep the scissors for travel-sewing as they are so small.

My mother was the main inspiration behind my sewing though, making much of my wardrobe in my early years, and helping me to put together ball gowns when I met my husband. She made my wedding dress to my design, whilst I slaved with the bridesmaids dresses. Latterly she humoured me when I tried my hand at dressmaking, and helped me when I overreached myself with bridesmaids dresses whilst still holding down a full time job doing something completely different. She is the most talented seamstress I have ever come across, and I will always take everything I make to show her.

gettymops is something that I have always wanted to do, and took my first steps towards making it a reality when my eldest son was born. There are some beautiful nursery design ideas on the high street, but they are so limited in their scope. I don't necessarily want to exactly match curtains, wall colour, bedclothes, cushions etc, but a few complimenting accessories with a bright and basic colour theme really bring a room together. You don't need to go over the top to make it look stunning, especially as a child's bedroom tends to be the smallest in the house.

I love the New England/East Coast style: fresh and clean colours with a light-hearted and bright sun-lit feel to the design. Heavy sickly-pink florals aren't really my style, nor are sludgy racing car themes. It is nice to make a room feel 'little-girly' but you don't need to make it too fluffy and fuschia-pink!

I combine my design ideas with some of the best fabrics around. From simple cotton prints to designer linens and cotton mixes, I try to mix up modern and vintage fabrics and 'notions' (dressmaking language for buttons, ribbons and so on) to the best effects. Have a look and let me know what you think. My Mum is my biggest critic as well as my biggest fan, but I will always welcome new ideas and comments!

And finally... what does the name mean? 'Gettymops' was my then two-year-old son's attempt at saying 'Forget-me-nots' in the garden when my husband and I were trying to think of a name for my fledgling enterprise. I hope it is a name you will not forget when thinking of buying gifts for the little ones in your lives!
